Davie, United States - January 13, 2018 /PressCable/ —

Dynamic Orthopedic and Memorial Adaptive Sports & Recreation have recently teamed up to to help bring the excitement and joy of wheelchair basketball to kids who are dealing with severe disabilities.

The amazing prosthetics and orthotics treatment of Dynamic Orthopedics has become well known in the South Florida region. This league starts a new path of not only helping treat these children but also to greatly help enrich their lives by participating in active, competitive sports.

The Junior Wheelchair Basketball league’s official name is the Fort Lauderdale Junior Sharks. Their first practice of 2018 was on January 7th. They will be practicing bi-weekly from 4:00pm-6:00pm at Carter Park off of Sunrise Blvd. The age for the kids participating is between ages 5-13.

Playing competitive sports will greatly help these children who are dealing with an enormous difficulty in life to gain confidence. The reaction and feedback from the children thus far has been exceedingly positive and encouraging.

Dynamic Orthopedics’ owner Melisa Chang had this to say, “You can feel the overwhelming amount of positive energy when watching these kids enjoy the sport of basketball. So far we are only beginning practices. This is a work in progress to gain more participation, build numbers of participants and help these kids learn the game. Some have never played before. We are teaching them how to be competitive, how to maneuver the wheelchair and bounce a ball, increasing their endurance, their aim and their strength.”

The children are also very fortunate to have a coach with an intimate understanding of their life situation who has played wheelchair basketball himself. Melisa Chang said, “Coach Luis Amaro is doing a great job working with them. He has an understanding of what it takes to play wheelchair basketball at a competitive level. He himself uses a wheelchair.”

South awaits thaw from snowstorm, icy roads and numbing cold

Jan 19, 2018

DURHAM, N.C. — Southerners awaited a big thaw that would end days of icy roads, broken pipes, snow and numbing cold after a fierce winter storm blasted their normally mild region. For the third straight night, state troopers warned of ice making roads and highways treacherous after the snow that hit a wide swath of the South melts and refreezes in the early hours Friday. After sunrise, forecasters said, a major warmup will be on the way. The weekend looks downright balmy by comparison, with highs expected to reach the more typical 50s and 60s (10s and 15s Celsius) for...

Winter is off to late start in normally frigid rural Alaska

Jan 19, 2018

ANCHORAGE, Alaska — Winter is off to a late start in parts of the nation's largest — and usually coldest — state. Months of higher-than-normal temperatures in parts of rural Alaska have opened dangerous gaps in frozen rivers that residents use to travel from village to village and to hunting grounds since there are no roads. One troublesome ice highway is the half-mile-wide (0.8-kilometer-wide) Kuskokwim River, where a man died New Year's Eve after he and five family members — traveling on a snowmobile and sled — fell into a gaping hole. The others survived. Search and rescue teams in...

Zoo director Thane Maynard's own "Saving Fiona" will later this year join the growing library of books about her. The Cincinnati Reds baseball team will feature a Fiona bobblehead, and the minor-league Florence, Kentucky, Freedom plans a Fiona snow globe this summer. There will...

Jan 19, 2018

BOSTON — Thousands of Haitian immigrants living in the U.S. legally will face employment and travel hurdles because President Donald Trump's administration delayed the process of re-registering those with temporary protected status, Haitian community leaders and immigrant activists say. U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services released details Thursday about the next steps for the 60,000 Haitians with the special status. Officials said the delays had to do with working out how Haitians will be able to prove their employment status until they must leave the country in July 2019. But Haitian immigrants and advocates complained Thursday's measures wouldn't help thousands of...
