Genetic sleuthing bolsters food poisoning searches

Apr 26, 2018

ATLANTA — Disease hunters are using genetic sequencing in their investigation of the ongoing food poisoning outbreak linked to romaine lettuce, a technique that is revolutionizing the detection of germs in food. The genetic analysis is being used to bolster investigations and — in some cases — connect the dots between what were once seemingly unrelated illnesses. It also is uncovering previously unfathomed sources of food poisoning, including one outbreak from apples dipped in caramel. So far, most of the work has largely focused on one germ, listeria. But it is expanding. By the end of this year, labs in...

Lynching memorial and museum in Montgomery open to public

Apr 26, 2018

MONTGOMERY, Ala. — The public is getting its first look at a lynching memorial and museum in Montgomery, Alabama. The National Memorial for Peace and Justice, opening Thursday, is dedicated to 4,400 individuals who lost their lives in lynchings and other racial killings between 1877 and 1950. Their names are engraved on 800 steel rectangles, one for each U.S. county where lynchings occurred. A museum is also opening in Montgomery, called The Legacy Museum: From Enslavement to Mass Incarceration. Launch events include a "Peace and Justice Summit" featuring celebrities and activists like Ava DuVernay, Marian Wright Edelman and Gloria Steinem....

The state that wants to spend more, not less, on prison food

Apr 26, 2018

HARTFORD, Conn. — Connecticut may be spending more on meals served to inmates, bucking a trend toward cutting the cost of prison food. Democratic Gov. Dannel P. Malloy has proposed increasing the budget by 10 percent, hoping to add more nutritional items to the menu. Malloy says an investment in healthier food could save the state money on prisoner medical costs, both in and out of prison. The American Civil Liberties Union says it's finding more inmates are chronically hungry. Ed Calderon of Bridgeport, Connecticut, has been out of prison for 13 years but still remembers fights breaking out between...

Arizona unites to care for, feed kids during teacher strike

Apr 26, 2018

PHOENIX — From gathering gift cards, prepping boxed lunches and opening church doors for child care, communities across Arizona are getting ready for a historic teacher walkout that could keep hundreds of thousands of students out of school indefinitely. Working parents had a week to figure out where to send their children starting Thursday after teachers voted for an unprecedented statewide strike to push for increased education funding. While tens of thousands of educators rally this week, students will be cared for by friends, family or community organizations. "Everybody is banding together and helping each other," said Stephanie Barton, an...

New Chipotle CEO plans menu 'tweaks,' and maybe drive-thrus

Apr 26, 2018

NEW YORK — The new CEO at Chipotle plans to make "simple menu tweaks," redesign its restaurants and expand its delivery service in the coming months. Another longer-term possibility: drive-thrus, which CEO Brian Niccol said are an "interesting proposition for Chipotle." Niccol didn't offer specifics on his plans, which he discussed for the first time Wednesday after joining the Denver-based company from Taco Bell last month. Wall Street analysts are eager to see how Niccol will put his stamp on Chipotle, which has long positioned itself as a step above fast food. His main job: bring customers back to Chipotle,...
