Nov 8, 2022

Recent release "The Adventures of EMMA" from Newman Springs Publishing author Richard Spinney follows the tale of a stray dog named Emma who is found one day by a kindhearted man named William, who can't bear to leave the famished dog on her own. After William rejects a vet's suggestion to put Emma down, William takes Emma home where Emma thrives during the winter, begins her numerous solo adventures in the spring, and meets many kind people when she accompanies William into town.

BREWER, Maine - November 8, 2022 - (Newswire.com)

Richard Spinney, who served for 20 years in the U.S. Coast Guard and is currently a member of the Maine Genealogical Society and a former contributing editor of "The Maine Genealogist", has completed his new book "The Adventures of EMMA": a captivating story of how a stray dog's life was affected by people she encountered after being rescued from a life of loneliness and starvation."

"When William meets Emma, she is famished, dehydrated and barely alive, having run away from an abusive owner," writes Spinney. "Although a vet suggests putting the dog down, William takes her into his household, along with his wife and two huge dogs.

"As the months pass, Emma gains more confidence and independence. After Emma regains her strength, she is excited to explore her new surroundings. She ventures out on her own. Upon seeing her return one day, William turns to a visitor and concedes, 'That's Emma being Emma.'

"Each adventure is a new experience for Emma, whether it is by herself or accompanied by William or William's wife Molly and one of the dogs. Emma learns that every person brings new perspectives and lessons. If you look beneath the surface, you will see the true heart of a person. Some people are unkind like her former owner, while some people are really special like William and William's friend Elijah and other people whom she meets along the way."

Published by Newman Springs Publishing, Richard Spinney's adorable story is a moving exploration of the ways in which humans and dogs can learn deep truths about life from each other. Through kindness and understanding, William slowly helps Emma recover, and receives love in return tenfold as Emma learns all about the world through the different people she meets along her journeys.

Readers who wish to experience this uplifting work can purchase "The Adventures of EMMA" at bookstores everywhere, or online at the Apple iBooks Store, Amazon, or Barnes and Noble.

Why John Carpenter’s Big Trouble in Little China is both problematic and progressive

Despite the industry having previously shown little interest in the subject, two major Chinese-themed fantasy films were released in the same year: John Carpenter’s Big Trouble in Little China and the Eddie Murphy vehicle The Golden Child. Ever the cynic, Carpenter refused to believe in serendipity. “How many adventure pictures dealing with Chinese mysticism have been released by the major studios in the past 20 years?” he asked Starlog...

Mala, coriander, congee? This UK doctor sells Cantonese-inspired bread from home

Every fortnight in Walthamstow, East London, a sign with a hand-painted goldfish pointing towards a kitchen window appears on the side of a residential building: “Lucky Yu Bakery pick up”. On the other side of that window is Hai Lin Leung, a general practitioner selling Cantonese-influenced baked goods from her home – think congee sourdough, bolo bao (pineapple buns), gai mei bao (cocktail buns) and more. There is no shopfront, set opening hours or seating; yet queues regularly spill down the...

Is adopting Chinese fashion appropriation or appreciation? Artisans weigh in on the debate

As international fashion companies increasingly incorporate traditional Chinese design elements into their collections, accusations of cultural appropriation have flooded social media.
