Dubai, United Arab Emirates, October 23, 2026 -- FinanceFeeds is drawing attention to operational resilience as a strategic priority for banks, brokers, payment firms and market infrastructure providers, as recent cloud disruptions, infrastructure migrations and third-party software errors show how technology dependencies can affect customers across the financial system.
FinanceFeeds, an independent financial news and analysis platform covering online trading, fintech, payments and market infrastructure, is highlighting operational resilience as one of the defining issues facing financial services. As financial companies rely more heavily on cloud platforms, outsourced technology and specialist third-party providers, the question of what happens when a critical system fails has moved from the IT department to the boardroom and the regulator’s desk.

For many years, resilience was discussed mainly in terms of individual firms: whether a bank had backup systems, whether a broker could restore its trading platform, or whether a payment provider could process transactions during peak demand. That framing is becoming too narrow. Modern financial services are built on shared infrastructure, and firms that compete fiercely for customers may still depend on the same cloud regions, data centers, software vendors and processing networks.
When Independent Firms Share the Same Dependency
The practical consequences of that concentration became visible in October, when a power event at a Google Cloud facility serving the London region disrupted services at several British financial institutions at the same time. FinanceFeeds examined how Revolut’s Google Cloud outage exposed shared risk across UK banks, with account sign-ins and other customer services affected for several hours and regulators subsequently seeking further information from Google.
The episode illustrated a point that resilience specialists have made for some time: diversification at the brand level does not guarantee diversification at the infrastructure level. Customers may hold accounts at several institutions to spread their risk, but if those institutions rely on the same underlying technology, a single incident can affect all of them simultaneously. For supervisors, that creates a systemic question about concentration that cannot be answered by examining any one firm in isolation.
It also raises practical questions for individual firms. How are applications distributed across availability zones and regions? Which services can fail over automatically, and which require manual intervention? How quickly can a firm communicate with customers when the cause of an outage sits with a supplier rather than within its own systems? FinanceFeeds expects these questions to feature more prominently in regulatory engagement, vendor negotiations and board-level risk discussions.
Modernizing Critical Infrastructure Without Interrupting It
Resilience is not only about responding to failures. It is also about how critical infrastructure is changed. Market infrastructures and large financial institutions must modernize aging technology while continuing to operate services that markets depend on every day. That is a delicate task, because the migration itself can introduce risk.
FinanceFeeds has reported on how CLS moved its FX settlement infrastructure to a new data center environment as part of a multi-year modernization program. CLS said the first settlement cycle in the new environment handled nearly two million transactions worth more than $9 trillion, a reminder of the scale at which some financial infrastructure operates and of why careful planning, staged validation and operational discipline matter when systemically important services are moved.
For the wider industry, such projects highlight that modernization and resilience are not opposing goals. Older infrastructure can itself become a resilience risk if it is difficult to maintain, upgrade or secure. The challenge is to manage change in a way that preserves continuity, with clear testing, rollback plans and communication with the participants who rely on the service.
Third-Party Software and the Customer Experience
Operational resilience also extends to less visible processes. Financial companies increasingly rely on external providers for functions such as identity verification, data processing, statements, reporting and customer communications. When one of those components fails, the customer typically holds the financial brand responsible, regardless of where the error originated.
FinanceFeeds covered a recent example in which Wise said it would cover UK customers’ tax shortfalls after a third-party software error produced incorrect tax statements for users of its investment products. Wise said its internal controls identified the problem and that the underlying issue has been fixed. The case shows how an error in a supporting process, far from the core money-transfer service, can still create financial consequences for customers and remediation costs for the firm.
As financial companies expand into new products, the number of suppliers and processes they depend on tends to increase. Each addition can be individually manageable, yet together they create a complex web of dependencies that must be mapped, monitored and tested.
Resilience Becomes a Regulatory and Commercial Priority
Regulators in many jurisdictions have strengthened their expectations around operational resilience, third-party risk management and incident reporting, including through frameworks such as the European Union’s Digital Operational Resilience Act. Firms are increasingly expected to identify their important business services, understand their critical suppliers, set tolerances for disruption and demonstrate that they can remain within those tolerances during severe but plausible scenarios.
Resilience is also becoming a commercial differentiator. Customers of banks, brokers and payment providers may never read a firm’s technology architecture documents, but they notice when they cannot log in, move money or close a position. Reliability during stressed conditions can shape customer trust far more than new product features introduced during calm periods.
Communication is part of resilience as well. During a disruption, customers want to know whether their money is safe, whether payments have gone through and when services will return. Clear status pages, timely updates through more than one channel and honest explanations after the event can preserve trust even when systems fail. Firms that treat communication as an afterthought often find that confusion during an outage does more lasting damage than the outage itself.
FinanceFeeds’ Coverage Focus
FinanceFeeds will continue examining operational resilience across banking, online trading, payments and market infrastructure. Its coverage follows incidents as they unfold, the regulatory response that follows, infrastructure modernization programs and the vendor relationships that increasingly determine how financial services perform.
The publication’s approach is to connect individual events to the broader structural questions they raise: where concentration risk sits, how firms test their dependencies, how incidents are communicated and what customers can reasonably expect when something goes wrong.
As financial services become more digital and more interconnected, FinanceFeeds expects these questions to remain central to how the industry is supervised, how firms choose their technology partners and how customers judge the institutions they rely on.
