Gulfcoast Eye Care Now Offering SMILE® Refractive Vision Surgery
Aug 6, 2021
SMILE offers an alternative to LASIK for some patients. Dr. Manning and his team at Gulfcoast Eye Care are the only providers in the Tampa Bay area with the equipment and the expertise to do it.

In their ongoing mission to offer the most advanced, effective, and safe eye surgeries possible, the surgical staff at Gulfcoast Eye Care is proud to add ZEISS SMILE® refractive vision surgery to their services lineup. This makes Gulfcoast the first and only Tampa eye care provider to offer SMILE, and enables the practice to offer even more diverse and comprehensive vision solutions.
“LASIK is great for many of my patients, but for others, SMILE may have some advantages for some eye types and lifestyles,” said Michael H. Manning, M.D., F.A.C.S. Dr. Manning is Gulfcoast’s lead eye surgeon, and a pioneer in the field of LASIK, which lends even more credit to his trust in SMILE as a LASIK alternative for certain patients.
SMILE stands for Small Incision Lenticule Extraction. During this procedure, the ZEISS VisuMax® femtosecond laser is used to create a small disc of tissue in the cornea, called a “lenticule.” This lenticule is removed through an extremely small opening in the cornea, allowing Dr. Manning and his team to precisely reshape the cornea — similar to LASIK, but without the need for a corneal flap.
SMILE has some advantages over LASIK, especially for dry eye patients, as studies show that SMILE has less dry eye or other short-term side effects compared to similar eye surgeries. It also often boasts a faster recovery and return to regular activities than other refractive vision procedures. And, it’s even faster than the already quick LASIK: SMILE only requires one laser, while LASIK needs two, and SMILE only takes about 30 seconds of laser treatment per eye.
“SMILE represents another modern advancement in some key aspects of LASIK, which is why we’re proud to now offer it,” explained Dr. Manning. “It gives patients another option for clear, comfortable vision.”
Smile is FDA approved for patients with nearsightedness up to -10.00 D, and -3.00 D of astigmatism. Gulfocast Eye Care is now offering SMILE consultations.
