In the podcast interview Young stated he wanted to set the record straight about Henry Kissinger's role in the American Vietnam War that ended so badly for the Americans and the South Vietnamese. "Kissinger's Betrayal" is the result of forty years of determined digging through volumes of formerly secret documents.
His book cracks apart the conventional wisdom that has prevailed over the past fifty years. It was commonly accepted as fact that South Vietnam was never worth the effort and treasure spent on it because it could never have prevailed. And winning the "hearts and minds" of the South Vietnamese people was folly.
Young has discovered a new understanding of the French colonial attitudes toward the Vietnamese people that marginalized their rights to freedom, liberty and independence. He discovered that Kissinger was heavily influenced by those French attitudes and let them influence his dealings in the Paris Peace talks to the detriment of the South Vietnamese.
Young's qualifications for the monumental task of writing "Kissinger's Betrayal" are substantial. He graduated from the International School at Bangkok, Thailand, Harvard College and Harvard Law School. He is the author of Moral Capitalism: Reconciling Private Interest with the Public Good, The Tradition of Human Rights in China and Vietnam, and The Theory and Practice of Associative Power: CORDS in the Villages of Vietnam 1967-1972. Today he serves as the global executive director of the Caux Round Table for Moral Capitalism.
