A Scientology Volunteer Minister from Soshanguve is bringing hope to learners struggling with reading for meaning.

Soshanguve, Gauteng, South Africa - January 18, 2024 —

Recently, a Soshanguve based learner support programme welcomed new students in their afterschool programme to help learners read for meaning. Boitumelo, who is a Scientology Volunteer Minister from Soshanguve has been assisting many struggling learners in her community with an afterschool learner Support programme that has empowered students to overcome the impossible barriers to learning even produced top performing students throughout 2023, she is now ready for 2024.

Upon seeing the devastating dropout rate and the deadly consequences that follow afterwards, Boitumelo decided to step in and help learners improve their literacy. This has now turned into a movement of assisting failing students with Learner Support Tools that has improved their school results and awakened their interest in learning.

In a short documentary on YouTube, she describes how she has been using the Scientology Tools for Life to empower the kids she works with. She aims to empower many more.

“The learner support programme has really helped me a lot. I was struggling in school but that is over now all thanks to this afterschool program where I received a lot of help to improve my studies”, said one of the previous students.

Despite the hardships and challenges that come with living in a township, Boitumelo found her passion for helping kids and pursued her desire to help learners with learning difficulties. "When kids drop out of school, they start getting involved in detrimental habits like taking drugs and stealing. They see no hope in education anymore," said Boitumelo. "Kids need help from us as a community. They need to be able to understand what they are reading and what it means and how they can apply it. If not, then what will their lives be like? We need to show them that we are here to support them and that if they feel like quitting, the learner support program is here for them and they can have a future. That is what learner support is. It's that extra step beyond content delivery that you take to ensure the child's wellbeing is taken care of," she added.

Not only did she decide to help. She further established her own NPO called Arise and Shine in order to create an after school care platform where learners with learning difficulties can come and receive learner support. "At first, it was tough. But now the kids are living proof of the success of this intervention. They always ask me when the next session is. Their results have improved significantly. The program works," continued Boitumelo.

According to her, understanding that kids are also human and are complex with their own personalities has also assisted her in understanding them properly. She gets them involved so that they can also experience that their ideas count and they are capable of solving problems. "The Tools for Life have helped me a lot. They provided me with the right tools for every situation. I know exactly how to help and encourage them now," added Boitumelo.

And the learners express it themselves, "This Learner Support program has helped me a lot as a learner. I have improved a lot academically. I have seen it help others too. Without it, I would be nowhere right now," said one of the learners assisted by Arise and Shine.

The "Tools for life" skills development program is delivered for free by the Scientology Volunteer Ministers as a way to empower communities and is applicable to all members of society. They host a variety of free seminars for communities and have trained thousands and thousands from their headquarters in Castle Kyalami on this effective program written by humanitarian L. Ron Hubbard.

"Thank you very much to the Scientology Volunteer Ministers who have supported me a lot in starting this program. I have been able to create positive change and intend on doing more for my community. It makes me feel good and makes my life worthwhile," concluded Boitumelo.

‘More freedom’: Chinese cheongsams get reinvented by Hong Kong fashion designer

For her Bamboo collection released in February 2026, Hong Kong fashion designer Leah Shiu dived into the symbolism of Chinese knots such as pankou, or frog knots. “There are, like, 100 different kinds of knots, and each has its own significance,” says the 28-year-old. “I try and make sure that my customers understand the meaning of a Chinese knot – the fact that it’s like an infinity sign and represents longevity. “I want to educate the consumer on Chinese aesthetics, philosophies and...

Explainer: How hard water affects your hair and skin – and what can help

Water is the one part of a shower nobody thought to question. You research the shampoo, read the ingredient list on the back of the shower gel, and then you rinse all of it off with whatever comes out of the tap. Except that the water is doing something too – even if just what hasn’t been given a name. There’s a good chance you experienced the effects of hard water before you ever heard the term. You know it as the chalky ring that reappears on your shower screen days after you scrubbed it off,...

What is frozen shoulder? Symptoms, treatment, risk factors and exercises

When her left shoulder began to ache shortly before she turned 50, my sister Carol Wilson ignored the pain and put it down to a poor-quality mattress. She hoped the situation would resolve when she moved house in the UK – and got a new bed. The pain continued. “I kept hoping it would get better,” she says. “But it didn’t.” Her doctor diagnosed a frozen shoulder and alluded to it being something that occurred in “women of a certain age”. He prescribed physiotherapy, which didn’t help her much,...

Who is Ahmed Nur Said Elmi? Meet Ilhan Omar’s ex-husband, alleged to be her brother

As the 2026 US midterm elections draw near, Minnesota Democratic congresswoman Ilhan Omar has found herself embroiled in renewed controversy over her immigration history and past marriage to Ahmed Nur Said Elmi. Elmi has long been alleged to be her brother, although the Somali-born legislator has denied such claims, which remain unproven. However, in 2016, the FBI and the Department of Homeland Security found some evidence suggesting the marriage may have been fraudulent, The New York Times...

How China’s ‘enchanting’ farms became a draw for foreign tourists

When the travel agency China Highlights organises bus trips for foreign tourists to iconic sights across China, the company says one last-minute request keeps cropping up again and again. “Can we visit a farm?” The question has become so common that guides now organise farm tours lasting a day or two for groups as they drive back from scenic spots such as Huangshan and Zhangjiajie, according to company CEO Steven Zhao. The tourists often wanted to meet the farmers, have lunch in their...

Why the Chinese immigrant story Thousand Pieces of Gold (1991) is a lost Old West classic

Sometimes, through no fault of their own, good films slip through the cracks. They fall out of fashion, are misunderstood by critics or are poorly distributed, and it can take the passage of time – or a miracle – to bring them back into the light. So it is with Nancy Kelly’s 1991 period piece Thousand Pieces of Gold, adapted from Ruthanne Lum McCunn’s 1981 novel and starring Rosalind Chao from The Joy Luck Club. The film is a sincere, authentic-feeling drama based on the incredible true story of...
