London X City Examines What Londoners Think About Boris Johnson

Naturally, the Conservative Party will blame the prime minister when they fail in the next election, especially when many believe that he mishandled Brexit. Whether that will be true or not, it is important to understand what Londoners think about Boris Johnson.

Business leaders in the capital city have been warning the government that it needs to step up its efforts to boost the city’s economy in view of the impact of the coronavirus pandemic. There are indicators that indeed, London has been left behind, especially with the City’s financial services industry still on unsteady ground as it has to haggle with the EU after Boris Johnson mostly failed to consider the industry during the Brexit negotiations.

Observers on the ground noted that while office attendance in cities like Birmingham and Manchester are almost back to pre-pandemic levels, it’s still less than 50 percent of what it previously was in London. The capital city also has the largest percentage of furloughed workers in England. Meanwhile, footfall in the West End entertainment and shopping district is still at 50 percent levels compared to pre-pandemic levels as of the week starting July 26. Business leaders are therefore concerned that the city may take many years to fully recover.

Ironically, Londoners played an important role in Johnson being elected as British prime minister. And yet, the actions of Boris Johnson after Brexit are fueling the notion that London is not a priority of the government. In fact, civil service work have been transferred to certain parts of northern England where Johnson has had significant help in the 2019 election.

The issue is that while London may not seem to hold sufficient political capital for Johnson, it may hold the key to the UK recovery out of the pandemic that could be important for his political career. Indeed, there are signs that the Conservative Party is in a crisis. In the 2019 election, the Labour Party got 49 of London’s 73 seats. And Sadiq Khan, also of the Labour Party, won a second term as Mayor of London, crushing his Conservative opponent by 55 percent to 45 percent.
