Phobio LLC Explains Why "Reuse" is One of the Best Ways To Lower Our Impact on the Environment

Yet while recycling is great, reuse is even better. The experts from Phobio LLC, a company that specializes in reusing products, are going to explain why.
"Recycling is fantastic, and we should recycle as much as we can," a spokesperson from Phobio LLC explains. "That said, there's always some level of waste and inefficiency with recycling. Reuse is often less wasteful and more efficient."
Recycling requires energy, and sometimes a lot of it. Some materials can be recycled relatively efficiently, like aluminium. However, glass and plastic recycling often requires a lot more energy and processing.
Sometimes, the process is so inefficient that glass and plastic you put in the recycle bin still goes to the landfill because recycling plants refuse to process it. Ultimately, only a quarter of the glass is recycled. Why? Because, in part, recycling glass is expensive and takes a lot of processing, which requires energy.
Meanwhile, some types of plastics are easily recycled, while other types aren't. Yet even recyclable plastic takes quite a bit of energy to process. "If you're going to recycle stuff, you typically have to sort the materials, then reprocess them," a spokesperson from Phobio LLC notes. "This takes energy and costs money. Some materials also take a lot of energy to recycle. Usually, reprocessing is still better for the environment than using virgin materials, however."
Electronics and other multi-substance products are especially difficult to recycle. A smartphone will contain a variety of different materials, including glass, plastic, copper, silver, and even gold and palladium. Yet to recycle these materials, recyclers usually must first separate them.
The process to recycle gold is different from the process to recycle glass, silver, and other materials. And ultimately, while about 80 percent of a typical smartphone can be recycled, the rest goes to waste.
Phobio LLC Breaks Down "Reuse"
Reusing something is often far more efficient and more affordable too. Instead of breaking a product apart and processing it, you can simply use it as is. You may have to spend some energy shipping the product and refurbishing it, but it's still often far more efficient than recycling.
"With something like a smartphone or computer, it's much better if we can extend the life of the smartphone by a few years by reusing it," a spokesperson from Phobio LLC argues. "This could lower demand for smartphones, which means less material will go into producing them, which is ultimately better for the environment."
Of course, once the smartphone reaches its true end-of-life, it's best to recycle it. The same is true for computers and many other products as well. Still, it's best to reuse before we recycle. By reducing the among of energy and materials that go into production, we can greatly reduce our impact on the environment.
