In 2020 alone, surgeons in America completed over 160,000 platysmotomy procedures to correct aesthetic problems that are difficult to repair with changes to exercise or eating habits. The most common reasons patients seek platysmotomy procedures, as explained by Dr. Chip Cole, include double chins, sagging neck or lower face skin, and excessive wrinkling. While an experienced surgeon can remedy these problems, the surgery is not without risks, and it may take anywhere from 10 days to a month before patients can resume their normal activities after the procedure.
The new awareness campaign highlights the most frequently seen complications of these procedures, which include bruising and swelling that can often persist for several weeks. More severe complications are quite rare, but can occur in some situations, and may include prolonged swelling, or nerve damage that can cause weakness in the lower lip.
Dr. Chip Cole also explains what factors may increase the risk of complications from platysmotomy surgeries, and what patients can do to minimize the chance of a poor outcome. While patients should consult their surgeon for a full exam before the procedure, the campaign explains that being in good general health, not smoking, and having realistic expectations of the final outcome are some of the most important factors.
During the recovery process, the campaign explains that it is important for patients to keep their necks immobilized as much as possible, and their heads elevated. This helps to protect the stitches from tears and allows a small drain often placed near the incision site to keep fluids from building up.
