According to Shawn Kilgarlin drug screening plays a key role in the criminal justice system, the workplace, and rehabilitation programs for people with addictions
Shreveport, LA - August 15, 2021 /MarketersMedia/ —
Addiction to illicit substances has become a real issue nowadays, affecting private lives, workplaces, and public safety. According to a report from the Recovery Centers of America, “Drug and alcohol use in the United States costs $1.45 trillion in economic loss and societal harm annually. This includes $578 billion in economic loss and $874 billion in societal harm through quality of life adjustment and premature loss of life.” While governments have been trying to address the problem through stricter regulatory and legislative measures, much of the progress has resulted from growing awareness about substance abuse and the development of innovative drug testing products that deliver greater accuracy and minimize the risk of results manipulation, says Shawn Kilgarlin, medical devices expert at American Screening LLC.
According to Shawn Kilgarlin drug screening plays a key role in the criminal justice system, the workplace, and rehabilitation programs for people with addictions, yet it is obvious that the standard methods of testing (urine, blood, hair, or saliva) have their shortcomings. She adds that the medical devices community has stepped up its efforts to develop faster, simpler, and more reliable drug tests, focusing on solutions that can help combat addiction in a more non-invasive manner. An example is a fingerprint-based system which is especially suitable for drug treatment services. The compact portable device delivers results in under ten minutes, collecting fingerprint sweat samples that are tested for various drugs and their metabolites. Aside from its speed and accuracy, the system has the advantages of being tamper-proof and capable of indicating when drugs have been handled but not ingested, which is useful when the tests are administered to law enforcement officers who come in contact with illicit substances.
Another novel solution is ocular scanning, which has been implemented in Montgomery County – Dayton (Ohio) and is being trialed in Lucas County – Toledo (Ohio). Court officials believe the system will accelerate and improve the drug testing process while also offering a more budget-friendly option for local authorities and a more dignified alternative for those tested. Shawn Kilgarlin says that developing systems that are tamper-proof and accurate is very important, but new drug testing technologies also have to be readily available. This means that public agencies, healthcare facilities, and business organizations should be able to afford them. Shawn adds that easy access to testing is crucial for combating substance abuse and addressing the economic, societal, and personal problems it creates.

Water is the one part of a shower nobody thought to question. You research the shampoo, read the ingredient list on the back of the shower gel, and then you rinse all of it off with whatever comes out of the tap. Except that the water is doing something too – even if just what hasn’t been given a name. There’s a good chance you experienced the effects of hard water before you ever heard the term. You know it as the chalky ring that reappears on your shower screen days after you scrubbed it off,...

When her left shoulder began to ache shortly before she turned 50, my sister Carol Wilson ignored the pain and put it down to a poor-quality mattress. She hoped the situation would resolve when she moved house in the UK – and got a new bed. The pain continued. “I kept hoping it would get better,” she says. “But it didn’t.” Her doctor diagnosed a frozen shoulder and alluded to it being something that occurred in “women of a certain age”. He prescribed physiotherapy, which didn’t help her much,...
As the 2026 US midterm elections draw near, Minnesota Democratic congresswoman Ilhan Omar has found herself embroiled in renewed controversy over her immigration history and past marriage to Ahmed Nur Said Elmi. Elmi has long been alleged to be her brother, although the Somali-born legislator has denied such claims, which remain unproven. However, in 2016, the FBI and the Department of Homeland Security found some evidence suggesting the marriage may have been fraudulent, The New York Times...
When the travel agency China Highlights organises bus trips for foreign tourists to iconic sights across China, the company says one last-minute request keeps cropping up again and again. “Can we visit a farm?” The question has become so common that guides now organise farm tours lasting a day or two for groups as they drive back from scenic spots such as Huangshan and Zhangjiajie, according to company CEO Steven Zhao. The tourists often wanted to meet the farmers, have lunch in their...
Sometimes, through no fault of their own, good films slip through the cracks. They fall out of fashion, are misunderstood by critics or are poorly distributed, and it can take the passage of time – or a miracle – to bring them back into the light. So it is with Nancy Kelly’s 1991 period piece Thousand Pieces of Gold, adapted from Ruthanne Lum McCunn’s 1981 novel and starring Rosalind Chao from The Joy Luck Club. The film is a sincere, authentic-feeling drama based on the incredible true story of...
