The lawyer explains that according to the New York Penal Law, Larceny is an allegation that someone is depriving another person of their property. Attorney Jason Bassett also mentions that the context of “depriving” can be wide and does not only mean taking property away but also disposing of it. This means that someone can still be charged with larceny even if they are not keeping the valuable items.

Embezzlement, or gaining property through fraudulent schemes, is also considered larceny. Keeping possession of lost belongings can also be considered theft.
Furthermore, attorney Basset discusses that petit larceny is the first and easiest type of larceny, and where the value stolen is less than $1,000. This can be punished by up to a year in jail. On the other hand, grand larceny is a more serious theft type and can be punishable by up to 25 years in prison and huge fines. There are four degrees for grand larceny which will vary greatly based on the value of the stolen property.
