Woody Hester has completed his new book, "Leadership Maxims: 12 Timeless Leadership Truths + Real-Life examples of How They Can Drive Success": a compelling read that illustrates the tremendous power of identifying, internalizing and incorporating a few timeless leadership truths into one's personal leadership style, becoming a better leader immediately. It can be read by one person alone and also lends itself well to group study among leadership-learning groups. A free downloadable group discussion guide is available at TimelessLeadershipTruths.com.
In 1970, at the age of 24, U.S. Army Captain Woody Hester returned from a tour of duty in Vietnam. He was assigned to a staff position at the U.S. Army Air Defense Board at Fort Bliss, Texas. He was grateful. A break from the rigors of field duty and the stress of living in a combat environment were welcome, but it was his first staff job as an Army officer. It would be the first time in his professional life that he would manage the administrative side of project work and lead a diverse group of uniformed staff and Department of the Army Civilians. Projects came with tight schedules and hard deadlines. Millions of dollars were at stake. Failure would cost him, and those who relied on him, greatly. He was scared. He didn't have time to digest, process, and learn to apply complicated leadership theory. He needed practical wisdom he could apply immediately.
NO MATTER WHAT YOU'VE ACCOMPLISHED, SOMEBODY HELPED YOU. That was the first of a handful of his favorite leadership quotes and ideas (timeless leadership truths) he tacked to a bulletin board over his newly assigned desk. He cut them out of trade magazines and articles he read. What he didn't know at the time is that this particular timeless truth, the bulletin board itself, and later additions of other timeless truths would provide the practical wisdom he needed; that they would have a profoundly positive impact on his work at the Air Defense Board, and would continue to mean the difference between success and failure throughout his five-decade career in corporate and professional life.
Leadership Maxims can be read by one person alone, and also lends itself well to group reading and discussion among leadership-learning groups. Emerging, and even seasoned, leaders stand to benefit immensely from the 12 powerful truths presented in this book. Like the practical wisdom Woody Hester needed at the age of 24, readers can quickly internalize and apply these 12 leadership maxims, immediately becoming a better leader. Prior to his retirement, Woody Hester served as principal of F.G. Hester, LLC, convening and facilitating leadership-learning groups and engaging in leadership consulting for selected clients. That was immediately preceded by 38 years in the healthcare industry, during which he served as a health system senior vice president & chief people officer, as a community hospital President & CEO, as vice president of operations for a large teaching hospital, and others. Woody served in the U.S. Army, attained the rank of captain, and was awarded a bronze star and bronze star with oak leaf cluster for his service in the Republic of South Vietnam.

What is creatine? Health benefits of a supplement experts recommend for almost anyone
By Deborah Vankin My boyfriend turned 50 this year. He didn’t buy an expensive sports car. Or quit his job and form a garage band. He started taking creatine. “What is that, exactly?” I asked. “Oh, one of those things everyone takes after 50,” he said. Or 30. Or 80, as it turns out. My 84-year-old mother called the other day: “What’s, um, cree-ah-teen?” she asked. “Oh, and what’s some new popular music I should be listening to?” (She stays on top of the trends.) Creatine seems to be everywhere...
